Abstract. Liquid scintillation (LS) radiometry (the counting of nuclear emanations) has undergone continuous development since attempts were first made in the early s to detect natural 14 C by this method. The potential of detection of ionizing radiations from 3 H, 14 C and 32 P, isotopes used extensively as tracers in biomedical and biological research, was the trigger that prompted the Cited by: 9. Gamma radiation consists of high‐energy photons and penetrates matter. This is an advantage for the detection of gamma rays, as gamma spectrometry does not need the elimination of the matrix. The disadvantage is the need of shielding to protect against this radiation. Gamma rays are everywhere: in the atmosphere; gamma nuclides are produced by radiation of the sun; in the Earth, the Cited by: 2. M Shy, et al. and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at coinclassifier.club A scintillation counter is an instrument for detecting and measuring ionizing radiation by using the excitation effect of incident radiation on a scintillating material, and detecting the resultant light pulses.

It consists of a scintillator which generates photons in response to incident radiation, a sensitive photodetector (usually a photomultiplier tube (PMT), a charge-coupled device (CCD. An interfacing circuit for coupling several Tri-Carb liquid scintillation counters to a multichannel analyzer is described.

The display of the analyzer is completely controlled from the liquid scintillation counters and information from any one of the three channels in each counter can be displayed. The book presents papers on the mechanisms of the liquid scintillation process. Liquid scintillation counting is the measurement of radioactive activity of a sample material which uses the technique of mixing the active material with a liquid scintillator (e.g.

Zinc sulfide), and counting the resultant photon emissions. The purpose is to allow more efficient counting due to the intimate contact of the activity with the scintillator.
